BULLETIN: FINAL DETAILED WRITE-UP TO FOLLOW....
The Staub Championship Series, Round 1.
A 7 games series tied at 3 and 3.
The defending CBA Champion up 3-0 then losing the next 3 against a resilient
contender.
Game 7: 55,006 in attendance. 2 hours and 45 minutes. 294 pitches.
In the
end, it was a titanic blast off the bat of Ichiro Suzuki with a man on that
finally ended what could possibly be the most intense Game 7 ever in CBA's
10-year history, as well as one of the most exciting postseason series ever.
Carlos
Zambrano came through with a solid 10 and one third scoreless innings
matched by Roger Clemens equally solid 10 shutout frames as the Longue Pointe
Loggers defeated the Skokie Wolfmen in 11 innings by a score of 2 to 0 at
a delirious Molson Yards. The hard-earned victory sends defending champion
Longue-Pointe to face the winner of the Neah Bay/Belfast series in Round 2
of the Staub Championship Series.
Neither
team scored in the first 10 1/2 innings. Both starters, tenacious and
stubborn, were determined to outlast the other and go beyond their normal
limits.
Zambrano was lifted after one out in the
Skokie
10th after allowing a man on and
was replaced by closer Todd Jones who retired the side.
The
Rocket, in what might be his final start, lasted through the 10th and then
handed the ball to Joe Nathan for the Loggers 11th.
After an
out was recorded, Luis A. Gonzalez got things
rolling when he delivered a single. Jones batting for himself, missed a bunt
sign
and was retired on a weak infield popup. It was then that Ichiro Suzuki stepped
in
and, on a 2-1 fastball, cracked a two-run shot to the deepest part of
centerfield
(his 1st of the Playoffs) making Longue Pointe victorious to the delight of the
the
home town crowd. Longue Pointe finished with 7 hits while
Skokie
ended up with 4.
The
victory was credited to Todd Jones(1-0) who went 2/3 of an inning,
allowing no runs. Joe Nathan(0-1) was charged with the loss in relief. He
allowed 2 hits and no walks in 2/3 of an inning.

FOR IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE:
LP Comes From Behind To Defeat Clemens and the Wolfmen, 5-2
Montreal
Gazette Sports
Stephanie Myles
Longue-Pointe,
Oct. 7, (CN) In their very first meeting in the post season,
Josh Shapiro's Skokie Wolfmen squared off against Dennis Concepcion's defending
CBA Champion Longue-Pointe Loggers under a glorious full-moon in a fully-packed
Molson Yards.
The large
harvest Moon and the chilly night served as a thematic background setting
for the fourth duel between the Wolfmen's ace, 2006 ERA champion Roger Clemens,
and the dean of LP's pitching staff, Carlos Zambrano. Their three previous
match-ups
during the regular season have resulted in a win (3-2, April 30th), a loss (July
28th,
his first of ONLY TWO losses all season), and a no-decision (5-4
Skokie
(Patterson Win),
Sept 11th) for Clemens, and a win (4-0, July 28th) and two losses (April 30th &
Sept
11th) for Zambrano.
Skokie
tallied in the first inning scoring 2 runs when Izturis singled,
Edmonds
walked,
Tracy
reached first on a Shea Hillenbrand error, and Cantu singled.
Indeed, the full-moon and the early scoring appeared to point to another Skokie
drubbing of the Loggers who were swept in their last meeting in mid-September.
Following
Zam's shaky start, both he and Rocket settled into a pitching duel
matching goose eggs until the Logger 4th. Back to back singles by Counsell
and Hillenbrand were followed by consecutive strikeouts of Sexon and Varitek.
Torii Hunter finally got LP on the scoreboard with a mammoth homerun into the
bleachers in left center. This drove the crowd crazy and recalled Hunter's
clutch
dinger in last year's World Series Game 7 versus Philly.
Zambrano held the fragile lead as he exchanged donuts with Clemens for another 3
frames. It was in the fateful 7th inning that Shapiro and
Concepcion engaged in
identical strategic gambles which yielded widely disparate results.
In the
Wolfmen 7th, the Head Wolfman elected to pinch-hit for the Rocket, batting
second after a leadoff single by Mike Matheny. "We needed to get at least one
run
across," said Joshua during the post-game interview, "and we were trying to
force
LP's hand hoping Dennis might call upon his bullpen and pull Zam." Sending up
switch hitting Randy Winn (.267 CBA 2006, 3R, "A"-BNT "B"-H&R & .266 Clutch),
Concepcion
decided to stick with Zambrano.
"I had
given some thought to bring in Fuentes," Dennis said, "but on the mound visit
Zam told me that he had enough left to finsh the inning, so I left him in.
I knew that if I pulled him now, and with the pitcher's slot also batting 2nd in
my
half, I might have to pinch hit AND lose another pitcher... you can never take
anything for granted when you play the Wolfmen." The strategy paid off for LP
as Zambrano struck out Winn and got Lofton and Izturis to fly out.
Skokie
brought in Tom Gordon to face the Loggers in their 7th. In poetic symmetry,
LP also got a leadoff single when Luis Gonzalez, going 3 for 3 for the day,
stroked
his third hit. Long time Hitman/Logger Tino Martinez, who late last week
announced
his retirement following the World Series, stepped up to the plate for Zambrano.
The appreciative crowd of 56,305 gave him a standing ovation and had barely sat
down when Tino golfed Gordon's first offering, a low hanging curveball to
rightfield
way over a helpless Chad Tracy for a 2-run pinch-hit homer and a 5-2 margin.
"I'm not
really one given to curtain calls, and I don't like to show-up a pitcher,
but the rest of the bench wouldn't let me sit until I tipped my helmet to the
crowd,"
said the ever-modest
Martinez.
"It was a thrill to get such a vocal thank-you, and
really felt good to know that I contributed not only tonight, but for a career."
With a
comfortable safety margin,
Concepcion brought in Fuentes to retire the side
in the
Skokie
8th and Calero to close out the 9th. After getting 2 quick outs,
however,
Skokie
lashed out a Matheny double. Quickly
Concepcion dispatched
Matsui to LF to shore-up the left side.
Winn
singles to righfield but Matheny is held up at third out of respect for
Suzuki's arm. With 2 men on base and the potential tying run at bat, in comes
LP closer Todd Jones who then strikes out pinch-hitter Chris Shelton swinging
on a 2 and 2 change-up to end another typically tense and close Skokie/LP
thriller.
