The 2006 CBA All star game took place on Longue Pointe's Yankee stadium field. Pitting arch rival leagues the Rusty Staub Conference vs the Roberto Clemente Conference, The fans turned out to see a competitive ball game. With fans driving in from all over the U.S. and Canada, and a contingent from Holland, Luxembourg, and Ellesmere Island the house was a rockin for CBA's 10th anniversary All star spectacular. Several celebrities reportedly made their appearances. Seated intentionally in the Upper Decks to afford loyal fans who usually had upper deck seating to redeem those old stubs for opportunities to acquire lower seating for bleacher prices. Jack Nicholson and Charlie Callas were seen yucking it up along with Jennifer Love Hewitt and Star Jones. Seated in the Front Row was former President Bill Clinton and Ben Stiller who both Sported Parma Flamingo hats. Claude LaMarre and Gerald Benoit hooked up as a battery for the ceremonial first pitch.
Starting pitchers were Indiana's Scott Kazmir (18-6 4.01) and San Diego's CBA legend Jake Peavy (19-0 2.03).
The paparazzi was limited to outside the stadium opportunities to talk with ball players and personnel as the focus was on the fans and pure baseball intensity. With limited media distraction players came to play, and play they did in a thrilling contest covered by WCBA-TV media network and their affiliate the CBA mutual radio network. The games were covered by such nationally known well established radio market outlets. New York and Northeasts WJZ-570, and WABD-770. The South's WBAP-820 in the Dallas area, WCCO-1220 in the great North, WOWO-1190 in Fort Wayne, 1100 3WE-Cleveland, CKLW-900 in Detroit/Windsor, 890 WLS-Chicago, WCAU-1210 Philly, WSB-750 Atlanta, CHUM radio Toronto, 1030 WBZ Boston, KOGO-600 San Diego, KFOG-104.5 San Fran Bay area, CJAD-800 in Montreal Quebec, and various other regional outlets. Inside the stadium were writers from Baseball Digest, Sporting News, StratAlliance, and Strat Review only.
The game was a good one with Staub jumping all over Kazmir given the start by HAL for Clemente. Clemente chipped away and eventually won with a clutch hit by reserve Wells and a great day from Indiana LF Jason Bay who ended up 2 for 2 2 run day with a HR to start a comeback win for Clemente. Indy's Kazmir's shaky first inning had a walk by Giles and a double by Eckstein setting the table, as Giles dared to score from first against Bay's arm on the double. Derek Lee walked to load 'em and Ohio Thundercats' Mark Texeira delivered a 2 run single for the Staub. After Glaus K'd, Edmonds doubled bringing home Lee and Texeira for a 4-0 lead that Clemente would take back bit by bit.
Clem picked up two runs when in the second, Ottawa's David Ortiz swatted a long triple. Two batters later LF starter Jason Bay hit a long HR to start the Clem scoring. Staub retaliated in the third when Limoilou's Troy Glaus singled, and Skokie's Edmonds reached again on Belfast's Chone Figgins error. The Maine Express' lone All star representative Luis Gonzalez smacked a single for a run. In Staub's 4th, Figgins (117sb) singled and naturally stole second. He scored on a Derek Lee double. Clem stormed back in the bottom of the 4th. Vlad "the" Guerrero singled, as did Jason Bay. Miguel Tejada popped a huge 3 run HR to make the score 6 to 5 and give the Clem a lead. Neah Bay super reliever Saroman Torres entered to stop the bleed.
Staub took the lead in the 6th after Ohio's Mark Texeira , who had a strong day, doubled in Derek Lee. Clem not to be denied took control and the lead in the 7th. 2 walks to Carolina's Brian Roberts and Al Pujols, Brooklyn's Verning Wells singled in 1, and Vlad impaled Steve Shields(?) for another. Cordero pitched strong, Billy Wagner held, and Mariano saved for a 8-6 Clemente win clearly giving the Clem's bragging rights over Staub for CBA's strongest division. With a World Series win by Bob Fidler's Indy Redbirds and this 10th annual All Star win, Clemente has had a year to remember in 2006.
