The Neah Bay Whalers under replacement manger JD Adams has swept their 3
games against
The Redbirds before Indiana stormed back to win game 6 and the CBA Championship.
THE RED BIRD GAZETTE
Reported by: Skip Duckworth
This is Skip Duckworth as we are setting down with the World Champions Indiana Red Bird mgr. Bob Fidler
Skip: First thing I want to say is congratulations
Bob: Thanks a lot Skip and we want to say thanks to mgr Derek Adams on a great series as it was a close nerve wracking one.
Skip: Well what can you tell us about the series?
Bob: Well
Skip as you know we played the first two games at home at front our great
fans. We played
Skip: What
happen when you went to
Bob: After a
delay before could get back to play Derek Adams step in and got the Whalers
going. Game 3 was an exciting one with it going 12 complete innings and then
in the bottom of the 13th Bob Wickman
just hung a curve ball to Aaron Rowand and he
knew what to do with it and hit a 2 run HR. Game 4 we jumped up early and
had a big league but I didn’t manage the bullpen to well and to the Whalers
credit they came back on us to win 8-7 and tie the series up at 2-2 in
games. Game 5 reminded me of game 3 except we were hitting, I think we had
15 hits but couldn’t get that key hit and
Skip: Wow 15 hits and you still get shut out. That has to be some kind of record you don’t want to be on the wrong end of. Well how was the team feeling about coming back home?
Bob: Skip they were kind of down and so was I but we had a day off and I had a conversation with a friend of mine Dennis Concepcion the skipper of the Loggers. He told me Bob you have a great run and don’t get down on yourself and you are coming home so don’t give up. So I got fired back up and talked to the team and they said the fans deserve to see us go out there and fight for the championship.
Skip: Well it seems that your pep talk worked!
Bob: I don’t know if it was the pep talk, the fans or just the heart of champions these players have but they came out in game 6 to win and force a game 7.
Skip: So tell us about the game 6.
Bob: Well we
had Jarrod Washburn who we picked up during the yr to help us out for our
run at a championship but didn’t know he would be this important to us. The
Whalers scored first with a run in the first then we came back with 3 in the
bottom of the 2nd with back to back to back hrs by Bay, Nixon and
Skip: Well what happen in the final game?
Bob: Skip first of all I have to be honest with you this was most nervous I had been as a mgr I was even more nervous than when I was on the field playing myself. Well we had a great crowd of 45,000 plus come out for this game. They had Pedro on the hill that had been undefeated in the playoffs but it seemed like we had his number for some reason. Grady lead off the bottom of the first with triple into the gap then another unsung hero that we got earlier in the yr to play second and some third Placido Polanco lined a hit up the middle to put us up. Well then Pedro didn’t pay attention to Polanco and he stole second then I guess that Pedro was shook and he hung a curve ball to Albert and you don’t that to hitter like him and he made him pay with one of the longest hrs I have seen hit in the Bird Cage. A-Rod got fooled on a curve ball in the dirt and struck out so it look like that Pedro might be going to settle down. But then Bay came up and strokes a hard hit over the SS into lf and mgr Adams seen enough and brought in Felix Hernandez to pitch to Tony Clark who woke up the last two games. Tony hit a deep HR to RF to gives us a 5-0 lead in the first and take some of the pressure off Jon Garland who pitch a great game. As I said earlier Tony Clark was like the tiger that someone woke up, as he strokes another HR in the 6th to make it a 6-1 game which was the final score. We had the bullpen up from the 7th on in case Jon would tire but he seem like he just got stronger and went the complete way only giving up 8 hits.
Skip: Well it was a great series and congratulations from me and your great fans on your first World Championship!
Bob: Thanks Skip and thanks to our great fans that backed us the whole yr and who deserve this championship. Now we have to get our mind set and get ready for next yr to defend our championship as it will be a difficult task as our division had 3 teams in the playoffs but we are going to do our best!
Skip: Well this is Skip Duckworth signing off for now and just got to say what about those RED BIRDS!
The series opened with John Skillings managing his team. He disappeared and had his team taken over by CBA office consultant JD Adams to represent the Staub team. Below is a brief recap of the early series.
A Walk off HR by Trot Nixon in the bottom of the 9th led Indy to a tough 6-5
victory in game
1. John Garland went 8 allowing 3er,while Neah's Pedro was tossed for 4 er in 4
poor
innings. Neah had come back with 3 in the 9th against Torres and Springer before
Nixon's
bot 9th heroics.
Game 2 was a close duel for the first 7 after Hall doubled in a pair in the 2nd,
and Neah exploded in the 6th on a Furcal Hr and successive hits by Giles,
Sullivan,
Valentin, and N Johnson. An inning ending DP proved larger than originally
thought when
Indy mounted their own 6th inning rally highlighted by Jason Bay's RBI single
and SB.
Indy added another in the 7th then held on with outstanding bullpen work by
Padilla,
Isringhausen, Riske, and Hoffman to get their 2nd win.

Tony Clark slammed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI and Jon Garland went the distance
at US Cellular Field where the Indiana RedBirds beat the Neah Bay Whalers 6
to 1.
The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance
provided by Clark. He lifted one out of the park for a two run home run in
the 1st inning and delivered a solo blast (his 6th of the season) in the 6th
inning. Indiana and Neah Bay each finished the night with 8 hits.
The winning pitcher was Garland(3-0) who allowed 1 run for the game. Pedro
Martinez(4-1) was the losing pitcher. With this win, Indiana has a 12-8
record. They have been 4-6 lately. John Skillings was pretty down after the
loss. 'We've really been sputtering along lately, something like 1-9 in the
last week or two. That won't get it done.'
