CBA World Series Madness...

It's the "Wolfman" !

Wolfman Shapiro defeats Joe Wallace for 16th CBA crown...

The Cyber Baseball Association extends it's congratulations to Joshua Shapiro the C.B.A. World Champion.  In defeating the 2 time Staub Joe Wallace's Champion San Diego Surf, they earned their place in CBA history as the very best of 2012.  This seals a legacy with Joshua the "Wolfman" Shapiro.  He had guided his first CBA franchise first known as the Montreal Royals in his inaugural season. That team evolved in the Staub conference as the "Wolfman" guided them as the Skokie Wolfmen into the playoffs as a serious threat.  Joshua retired having never fufilled his ambitions in CBA to attend to his evolving career and relocation.  After taking leave, Josh returned to us thankfully assuming the helm of what was once Eric Lindner's Southwest Lizard King franchise.  With quite a few upgrades and deals as only the Wolfman could, the team was honed into fine baseball machine slicing and dicing it's way through teams, series, and ultimately the crown jewel and immortality in CBA's archive.   The Wolfmen din't win because they were the best Strat-o-matic card team (although they were good cards) Josh won because he was hungry like the Wolfman namesake.  His CM's always custom prepared.  The matchups all considered.  He was astute in his studying. It paid big. He is now the Champion Wolfman.
For Joe Wallace an outstanding achievement.  San Diego joins the elite list of 2 time conference champions.  Some notable teams of the past who won two conference championships.  Bob Fidler's  Indiana Redbirds, Dennis Concepcion's Longue Pointe Loggers, former Commisioner Claude LaMarre's Longue Pointe Hitmen, Rob Hite's Philly Phantastics, Marc Wasserman's Brooklyn Superbas, Jeff Boutet's Limoilou Wendigo, and Josh Shapiro who won two different conferences with two teams. The Surf are a legendary CBA team, but that golden ring still eludes.

In the first game...

It was Santana and Vogelsong - on two homers Cano and Boesch
2-0 San Diego after the top of the 3 but Tulo who has been quiet
hit a 3 run homer in the bottom of the 3rd for a 3-2 Skokie lead

then Skokie shutdown the Surf, Vogelsong, Adams, Holland
and scored two more - also stealing lots of bases for a 5-2
win to take a 1-0 lead in the best of seven

The Skokie Wolfmen defeated the San Diego Surf by a score of 5 to 2 at
Morrison Memorial.

Skokie brought 3 runs across the plate in the bottom of the 3rd inning. After
an out was recorded, Orlando Hudson was the sparkplug when he lashed a
single. One out later, Lance Berkman came to bat and drew a walk. Troy
Tulowitzki then belted a three-run homer. That scoring would be all that was
needed. Skokie had 8 hits overall, while San Diego had 5.

Ryan Vogelsong(2-0) went 6 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory. Greg
Holland gained credit for his 3rd save. Ervin Santana(0-2) was tagged with
the loss. He allowed 5 runs and 6 hits in 5 and 1/3 innings.

In game 2....

The aces Haren and Cain in game 2 in Skokie

Tulo hits a 2 run homer in the first and its 2-0 Skokie
Wright answers in the second with a 2 run homer for San Diego
and we are tied but that was all San Diego could do
where as Tulo grounds in RB! #3 and doubles in two for 5 Rbis
and leads skokie to another 5-2 win Skokie up 2-0

San Diego had many rallies against Cain but couldn't
do it - Cain now has his third win in a row

Game 3 we go to San Diego a hitters park where
hopefully home cooking can help San Diego turn it
around, it will be Humber vs Hudson with Lilly
and Santana for a game 4 - San Diego hopes they
won't duplicate what is happening to the Tigers
in the real series

the San Diego fans are asking can anyway get
through to Skokie especially their starters who
have now in 11 games held their oppoinents
to 3 runs or less 8 times

they say good pitching can win in short series
ok off to take a break, feed the stray cat looking
at me so sadly for food and back for game 3

Troy Tulowitzki left the yard and had 5 RBI as the Skokie Wolfmen defeated the
San Diego Surf by a score of 5 to 2 at Morrison Memorial.

The Skokie fans enjoyed the offense provided by Tulowitzki. He blasted a
two-run home run in the 1st inning and doubled plating two runs in the 5th
inning. Skokie rapped out 8 hits for the afternoon.

Matt Cain(3-1) went 8 innings allowing 2 runs for the win. Mike Adams got the
save, his 2nd. Dan Haren(1-2) took the loss. He surrendered 8 hits and 1
walk in 6 innings.

And Now game 3

Game 3 sees Humber vs. Hudson

San Diego takes an early 2-0 lead in the 2nd
and Skokie doesn't feel Humber is up to his
perfect game performance so he doesn't last
the second inning - San Diego threatens
to score more but Cassila (Giants luck)
puts out the jam

then in the 3rd (I think) after Beltre misses
a ball park homer, Skokie loads them for
Molina - 6-2 on Hudson, ball park Grand slam
4-2 Skokie - San Diego threatens again and
makes it 4-3 and has runners in 2nd and 3rd,
two outs but can't score - Skokie relievers
do it again and win 6-3 for a 3-0 lead by Skokie

the fans in Skokie are partying lights out

we will go to Game 4 with Lilly vs Santana
as San Diego tries to prevent the Woflmen onslaught
which has seen them win their last 8 games
and 11-1 in the playoffs so far

Skokie Wolfmen beat the San Diego Surf by the score of 6 to 3.

Holland(2-0) came through for Wolfman Shapiro with an excellent relief stint.
No one was able to reach base in his 3 innings. Brandon League relieved and
was untouched by San Diego as he recorded the save, his 2nd.

Daniel Hudson(3-1) was given the loss. He surrendered 6 runs and 10 hits in 6
innings.

Game 4 Is all San Diego

John Milonow here reporting for the Skokie news -
well the fans in Skokie - are very excited as with a 3-0 lead
it could be another sweep as was done with Philly

Lilly was going against Santana, the loser in game 1
in interviewing the boys, the excitement and tension
of the past two weeks seemed to be taking a toll on
the Wolfmen but they felt confident they could beat
Santana again

in the bottom of the first Cano hit his 2nd homer
for the series to give San Diego a 1-0 lead

in the meantime Skokie seemed to be floundering and
tired as they would get men on but couldn't advance them

in the 3rd Cano struck again and knocked in a second
run for a 2-0 San Diego lead

finally Skokie was able to bunch a couple of hits together
and Molina the hero of game 3 knocked in Skokie's first
run - then in the bottom of the 7th Cano again hit a double
and drove in 2 more runs for a 4-1 San Diego lead and
that is how the game ended as Skokie just could never
put a rally together.

So there will be a game 5 as San Diego keeps their
dignity and shows why they are the Staub Champion
Game 5 will see the team's aces, Cain vs Haren - a
rematch of game 2

So CBA fans check back next week (one weeknight)
as the World Series continues - can San Diego do the
unthinkable and come back from a 3-0 deficit or will
Skokie take it in Game 5? Stay tuned

In a game at Fenway Park the San Diego Surf got by the Skokie Wolfmen by the
score of 4 to 1.

Robinson Cano had a big day at the plate. He clubbed a solo home run in the
1st inning, doubled knocking in a run in the 3rd inning and doubled scoring
two baserunners in the 7th inning. San Diego out-hit Skokie for the game, 10
hits to 6.

Matt Garza(2-0) allowed no runs in 3 innings, and picked up the victory. Ted
Lilly(0-1) took the loss. He surrendered 2 runs and 4 hits in 4 innings.

The game started out slow, with neither team able
to score - I believe in the 2nd Stanton Double and
Hundley singled but Stanton was thrown out at
the plate.

In the bottom of the 5th, the Surf scored on a 2 base
error by Skokie's steady CF B.J. Upton and took a 1-0 lead

in the top of the 6th, Skokie had the bases loaded with 2 outs,
(2 singles and a HBP) but Beltre lined out

in the bottom of the 6th, San Diego took a 2-0 lead with
a double by Hundley, wild pitch and with two outs,
Youkills doubled Hundley home

Skokie just didn't seem to have it with them this
game - Ethier got on base in the 7th by an error,
Bourgeois pinch run and stold his 8th base of
the playoffs but Skokie went down 1-2-3

Skokie brought in Marshall for the bottom of the 7th
and held San Diego to a 2-0 lead

in the top of the 8th Skokie came to life - Molina
got to 2B on a single & error on Perralta at SS
Berkman, who other then a homer in Game 1 vs.
Cooperstown finally came through with an RBI
single to make it 2-1 San Diego

Tulo believe it or not sacrificed, Haren had thrown 6 shutout innings
and Garza was pitching in the 8th but since he couldn't stop Skokie
Mott came in - with 1 out man on second - Posada pinch hit and walked,
1st and 2nd - then Beltre came up and hit a screaming double to
Berkman - Hudson pinch run for Posada and against Victorino's arm
in CF Hudson tried to score (1-11) for Skokie to take the lead but
was gunned down so the score was 2-2.

Then Schierholtz was intentally walked, Teixiera walked - so
the bases were loaded with 2 outs for Marshall, and Skokie
had only one hitter left Aviles - to take the lead but he struck out.

Lopez came in to pitch to one left handed Surf hitter in the bottom
of the 8th and then Adams came in and stayed for a while

In the bottom of the 9th, Upton walked, Molina ground him to second
and then with two outs, Tulo was initally walked and hudson walked,
so bases loaded, two outs, game tied 2-2 and Beltre up, who tied
the game Struck out

San Diego got a runner to second with a sacrifice and two outs
in the bottom of the 9th but couldn't score.

then the game went into extra innings - a summary of what
happened of significance

Cano via a SB and throwing error on 3rd with 2 outs,
couldn't score in the bottom of the 10th

Top of the 11th for Skokie, 1st and 2nd, two outs couldn't score
(note as we played in extra innings every split hit Skokie rolled
they didn't get one)

13th inning - Cano walks, steal second, no outs, Victorino
tries to bunt him to 3rd, Cano thrown out at 3rd, Victorino tries
to steal 2nd base against League thrown out

Bottom of the 17th, Bruce on 2nd (single with wild pitch)
San Diego couldn't do nothin

Top of the 18th inning - Thornton pitching for San Diego
with one out Texiera singles (off a tired strike out on Thronton,
by this time we only had tired pitchers left, no hitters)
B. League having pitched 5 innings of relief tired, sacrifce
bunt, Texiera to second, then San Diego brings in Hudson
to pitch, wild pitch, Texiera to 3rd, Upton up - ground ball X
to the pitcher, single!! Texiera scores, Skokie up 3-2
Upton out stealing

Bottom of the 18th - Skokie brings in Lilly (tired)
to face Montero - Ground out
to face Cano - HBP, steals second base
tying run on 2nd one out

Skokie brings in Casilla (hoping the champion Giant
energy will carry over for their championship

he faces Victorino Flies Out - 2 outs - one more
out to go for a Skokie 1st ever CBA Championship

one more out to go - by this time the Wolfman is
screaming from the dugout - comeon Santiago Casilla
we got you in a key trade that gave away Bard to get
you and Holiday to bring over you and Teixiera, the
play who scored our 3rd run - come on buddy you
can get this guy (Youkills) a roll what is it
5-5 on Casilla card STRIKEOUT, SKOKIE is the
CHAMPION another 3-2 one run victory -

it was unbelievable - ask my life partner Katrina,
you probably never heard me shout so loud,
after 7 years, two previous world series trips before
(2007 and 2008) we finally won it all

Tomorrow I will write an analysis of how we won
the series - we wish to congraultation Jon (Cooperstown),
Rob (Philly) and Joe (San Diego) - all three of our opponents
were excellent and tough to beat, our 12-2 record in the playoffs
is not a reflection of the close games and games which could
have gone another way -

finally I am also going to gift the league a report discussing
our strategies for building a team - perhaps for some of you, you
have your own and this will be not necessary but maybe for some
teams who just made the playoffs but couldn't get farther or have
not even gone to the playoffs this might help you in some way

it will probably take a few weeks for the report as we are organizing
an on-line conference for the paranormal stuff we do -

so I want to thank everyone in the league, for making this such
a great league - you are some of the finest SOM baseball managers
I have played against - so I share this championship with all of you
- its a great feeling but wait for tomorrow to hear more

below is the box of Game 5 of the series

Wass asked me who was the MVP for Skokie, I would vote for Yadier Molina,
he hit .328 and had 16 Rbis for Skokie in 14 games

hope you enjoy the telling of this amazing game to finish the 2012 CBA
Season

I don't expect Skokie to be back in the running for 2013, we have a lot
of holes to fill and as we already announced we may try for going to rebuild

The Skokie doors are open to trade any and all of our players

enjoy your weekend everyone

50,876 fans watched an exciting game at Fenway Park. The Skokie Wolfmen
topped the San Diego Surf by the slimmest of margins, 3 to 2.

The score was tied at 2 after nine. Finally, Skokie pulled the game out in
the 18th inning. After an out was recorded, Mark Teixeira lined a base-hit.
Brandon League was next and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Daniel Hudson
then threw a wild pitch. B.J. Upton followed and he ripped a single. Both
teams totaled 13 hits on the night.

League(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 5 innings and allowing no
runs. League got help from Santiago Casilla who earned his 1st save.
Hudson(3-2) ended up with the loss in relief.

What is it Like to Win a CBA Championship?

The Keys for our Success in the Playoffs

By Wolfman Shapiro, 2012 CBA Champion

(Note: - This report I am writing, I hope will be received as a sincere effort to

share my joy and celebration after 7 years (six making it into the playoffs and one

year losing in a run off to Belfast due to usage of our key players) to finally win a

championship. This in no way is to say I am the best manager or that I wish to be

venerated in any way. I thought it might be fun, and since I am a writer, to

describe my experiences during the four weeks or so between the middle of

October and November. Perhaps this will be inspirational for the managers who

made the playoffs for the first time or for managers who have never made the

playoffs and dream of it. Well in this report here is what it was like to go through

this intense period and what were the keys for our success this year vs. the other

five years we made it and failed.)

First I would like to say, that even though it seemed as the Luck of the Wolfish

was with us – none of the three series we played was easy – as the three teams

we played (Cooperstown, winning four games by 4 runs; Philly who could

explode at any time; San Diego with a very good balanced and having to deal

with playing without a DH in a pitchers park). The final game of the World Series

going 18 innings and finally winning due to the pitcher he brought it and not due

to any direct hitting on our part again showed it was a tough series.

Now you may not believe what I am about to share with you, but during these

four weeks I was so focused, that during some of the games which were very

close and could have gone either way, I was visibly shaking and a nervous

wreck. So I am not sure, even though it’s a great great feeling to have finally won

a season – with all our hard work to build our team and playing many exhibition

games to prepare for each series and studying the teams for their weaknesses –

I am not sure if I would want to do this again. It did take a toll upon me both

mentally and physically – as if I put all of myself, all my essence and energy to

focus on finally winning. Because I knew with the late trades I made before our

trading time was over, that we might not get another chance to win for many

years. Especially when you build our teams as we have over 7 years, eventually

there is a let down.

But before we discuss what happened to me for this playoff season let us review

the agony and defeat successed in years past, we go back to being the manager

of the Montreal Royals in 2005.

The first matter is to congratulate Wolfman and his Skoakie squad on his first CBA championship.  I still remember when he decided to take a year to rebuild last season trading some of his stars for draft picks and youth.

However, when the best starter in the draft, Ryan Vogelsong, was still available at the 5th pick he had to make a decision.  Should he continue with the plan and pass him up for a youngster like Jason Kipnis or change the plans and try to build a contender around a 1-2 punch of Cain and Vogelsong?  He decided to take the 34 year old, coming off a resurgent season where he posted a 2.72 ERA in 180 innings... after all, he could always trade him later if the draft didn't shake out as he hoped.

Fast forward to the 17th pick... if he was going to build a contender, he'd need another starter, but with Collementer and McCarthy off the board at #9 and #13 the next best option was another starter having a surprise season... Phillip Humber.  His 3.75 ERA in 160+ innings would make a solid back end starter to compliment the lefty Lilly... but was he really worth the 17th overall pick?  The answer was no.  The Wolfman turned his eyes to bolstering his offense and selected a player who would make sense for both a contender or a rebuilder... the versatile Daniel Murphy who's .320 average and 2B eligibility would help his chances to compete and his age (26) gave him potential for years to come.

Into the 2nd round... somehow Humber was still on the board but with SP at a premium there's no way Humber could last until his 5th pick right?  NWS selected De Aza... who has developed into a great CF.  LLM took Holland... the power pen arm who posted a 1.80 ERA.  KWR took Beaven a great pick considering his solid season in 2012.  One more hurdle... would the rebuilding HHC go for the semi-young starter?  No, he took the young OF Alex Presley, and who could blame him after he posted an .804 OPS for the Pirates.

So the stars aligned... Skoakie selected Phillip Humber and was sitting on a solid rotation.  After filling out his bench and pen with his remaining picks... the rest is history.  Congrats Wolfman... with shrewd drafting, trading and skilled gameplay, you earned your championship.
