Adrian Beltre ripped 4 homeruns and had 7 RBI and Felix Hernandez was able to
finish what he started and was credited with a complete game as the
smoking-hot New Jersey Beatles beat the Quebec Frenchies by a score of 14 to
5.

Beltre enjoyed a big day at the plate. He smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' in
the 1st inning, lifted one out of the park for a two run home run in the 3rd
inning, doubled in the 4th inning, smashed a two-run homer in the 6th inning
and blasted a two-run home run in the 9th inning. The New Jersey offense was
great, scoring in 7 of the 9 innings.

Hernandez(11-9) allowed 5 runs on the game. The loss was charged to Bud
Norris(4-14). He allowed 3 homeruns in 6 innings of work.

'I've spent a lot of time in the cage and made some adjustments and they've
paid off,' Beltre said. 'I just take the same approach up there. I don't
overanalyze it. I go up there, see the ball and try to put a good swing on
it.'

Rabies Outbreak In Ottawa
New York- My daughter once asked me, "Daddy, what's an otter?" I sat down with her and opened the 'O' volume of the World Book encyclopedia, showed her the picture, and explained how otters are furry water creatures who do playful, cute little things with agile and dexterous attributes. I didn't use such big words at the time, but she understood and wanted to get one. Maybe we would've named him Andrew, or Mike, or Big Papi.
These are a few names of another species of otter, known in the baseball world as Ottawa Otters. This species is very different from the ones commonly seen in nature reserves and zoos. Although they have agile and dexterous attributes, they are not so cute and playful in the eyes of opposing teams. Indeed, when they become rabid they are quite unruly and tend to impose upon their adversaries in ruthless fashion. At the moment, it appears that an outbreak of rabies has infected these Otters, and GM Jack Jung is not calling pest control to alleviate the problem.
And why should he? His Otters lead all CBA teams in homeruns with 138 and runs scored, having passed the half-century mark with more than half the season yet to be played. Add to that an improved pitching staff and an outfield that chases everything down, and it's not so surprising to see them atop the standings at 49-28.
"It's been like a puzzle blocks process," says Jung, "finding the pieces that fit in the building. We've been blessed with some decisions that have turned out well for us."
Jack Jung has drafted exceptionally in recent years. First round selections Mike Trout in 2011 and Yu Darvish in 2012 have quickly risen to prominence this season. Trout was a highly touted prospect that most everyone considered a sure thing. Darvish was a gamble that paid hugely, being selected in hopes that he would leave Japan once his contract was up and he could choose his own path professionally. His numbers there were other-worldly, but pitching in CBA is a step up that many have fallen short of in the past. That doesn't seem to be the case with Darvish. Another Japanese pitcher, Hisashi Iwakuma, was taken this past spring in the second round. He, too, is rounding out nicely, though was less of a gamble having already made the move to North America and the independent minor leagues the year before.
Jung isn't often found on the trade route, but the trade of mired outfielder Cameron Maybin to Montreal for righty starter Doug Fister helped instill some consistency to the rotation that already featured Yovani Gallardo, and now Darvish and Iwakuma. Veteran Bartolo Colon completes a rotation that definitely holds its' own in the hitter friendly parks of the Clemente conference.
With young stars like Andrew McCuthen and Mike Trout excelling to the nth degree, you can look at the veteran presence of Monster Otter David Ortiz as the anchoring influence. And with a healthy Joe Mauer back in the mix, Ottawa has a the offence firing on all cylinders. The combination of a .356 team OBA and tons of power is more than adequate in outscoring the opposition.
"We just watch Big Papi," says McCutchen. "He shows us the way. You look at his approach at the plate, his eye, the way he stays back and looks for his pitch to hit. You get it in your head, man. Y'know, 'I don't want to swing at this. He's gonna throw me something I like.' He's shown us that we can have some control at the plate. When we see a mistake coming, we're all over it."
A 12 game bulge in the Schmidt division puts the Ottawa Otters in the driver's seat as we come to the all-star break, which will feature a few Otters without a doubt. So, if ever you meet up with an otter, just take care that it may be one of those rabid ones from Ottawa.

CBA:

Where the Action Is February 23, 2013

New York- CBA. The major leagues. The show. Playing baseball at this level was once considered to be only an American dream. Now it is a dream shared around the globe, from kids in the back yards and sandlots in the Dominican Republic and Venezuela to men dotting the fields of packed stadiums in Japan and Korea. And this is a time in the year when some few will find out if that dream has a chance at reality, when the CBA holds its' annual draft.
At approximately 11 AM eastern time tomorrow, Scott Kenan, owner and general manager of the Carolina Copperheads, will likely make a dream come true by announcing the first overall selection. Likely, because not all players being considered are without prior experience in the majors. Just ask Skokie pitcher Ryan Vogelsong. Likely, because those coveted early round picks are almost always devoted to acquiring the best young rising stars. Whatever happens, players and agents the world over will have all their media attuned to the goings on here in New York.
Indeed, Ryan Vogelsong's case is a rarity. For someone who hadn't pitched in the majors since 2006 with the Allentown Senators (now the Towaco Wolf Pack), being selected fifth overall last year came as a pleasant surprise to the then 34 year old, who had been playing in Japan.
"It's not that I'd given up hope. But after so long, you kind of don't expect anybody to be watching anymore. Even knowing that there had been scouts that went over to Japan who had spoken with my agent, I didn't dare think that anything would come of it," said Vogelsong. "I can't tell you how excited I was when my agent called me last year to tell me I had been drafted by Skokie."
Not only was he drafted, but won a spot in the rotation out of spring training and played a prominent role in the Wolfmen winning its'  first world championship. It's a testament to how far and wide CBA organizations will go to find the right players as they draw from the vast well of talent that is present at many levels.
"We weren't the only ones over there looking at Ryan," said Josh Shapiro, the wolfman himself. "We knew we wanted him, but we also knew that if we didn't snap him up somebody else would. I admit that picking him that early at his age was done with some reservation. But kudos to our scouting staff for recognizing that Ryan had found his way back to his game. Obviously, there are no regrets. I think, without him, we probably would have come up short of the title yet again."
Though not so long away from the majors, reliever Fernando Rodney could be getting the same call that Vogelsong did. After seeing his performance and command decline over two seasons, the Montreal Crows released him following the 2011 season. His disappointment at not being selected as a re-entry in last year's draft drove Rodney to elevate his pitching to the level that got him to the majors. He pitched well enough with Los Angeles of the independent leagues last season that led to Skokie acquiring him as a restricted free agent in mid-August, and has had a number of CBA scouts keeping an eye on him this winter in his native Dominican Republic. The word is that his name is on several draft lists of general managers looking to address their bullpen shortages.
But, as mentioned earlier, these are the rare ones. What teams are really hoping for is Mike Trout, Bryce Harper, or Jordan Zimmermann. This is where the scouting staffs really earn their paychecks. A shining example as to the impact of advanced scouting can be seen in the Philly Phantastics. GM Rob Hite has assembled what he refers to as 'the best birddogs in baseball', a scouting staff that he personally heads and travels with extensively. He believes that it is the key to Philly putting a competitive team on the field year after year.
"It's not easy when you have to cut down your roster every December to know who to keep, who to move, and who to cut," says Hite. "Certainly there are your core players that remain, but you can't hold on to everybody. The scouting that we do plays a huge part in how we move forward through all phases of the off-season. We look at everything. Sabermetrics, development in the minors and the independents, prospect maturity, even the psychology of certain players we look at. Things have to fit a profile for this organization."
There is an obvious measure of success for Hite where the draft is concerned. He claims that drafting a player at the right time to suit a need before it occurs prevents the necessity to move value at a later time. Players like Starling Castro, Jonathan Lucroy, and Eric Hosmer are examples of draft picks that have made or will make an impact at the major league level in a relatively short period of time, keeping fresh the mix of veteran leadership and young raw talent.
And as Shapiro alluded to, Hite adds, "You have to respect what your dealing with in this league. If you don't go out and find your guys,  someone else will. That's the nature of the beast."
Short turnarounds are not so uncommon. We saw glimpses last season of some youngsters looking to make a splash this season. Salvador Perez in Montreal and Mike Trout with the Ottawa Otters gave us a taste in 2012. Perez was even included on the Crows' post-season roster and looks to be the starting catcher in 2013. With shoe-in hall of famer Vladimir Guerrero's retirement, a whole different player than the one Jack Jung watched last year at AAA has to show up this spring to keep Trout from playing in Ottawa.
So many others can be named. Kipnis, Lawrie, Parker, Cespedes, Goldschmidt, the list goes on. Many new names and some old ones, too, will be the talk of baseball as they roll out on the list of players drafted onto CBA rosters, where the action is.

On the other hand, Most hits allowed in a 9 inn game

25 Geoff Geary Brooklyn in 6 innings relief vs Indiana Redbirds game 3 Clemente finals Oct 19th, 2006.
22 Mike Hampton Sunville in 7 Inn vs Carolina Copperheads July 25th 2010
20 Doug Johns of Southwest Lizard kings 1997 April 19 in 6 innings, Zack Greinke Philly vs Alamo Sept 16th, 2006.

Last week, David Price of the Brooklyn Superbas set a long standing Clemente record by striking out 19 batters in a game.  It took 12 IP to achieve the record against the Ottawa Senators.  The previous record was 18 in an 11 IP game by Brandon Morrow of Philly back in 2010 against Cooperstown...Brooklyn has been record hot this month after a slow start.  No coincidence as Miguel Cabrera goes, so do the Supers.  Cabrera has hit 2+ hits in 7 straight, and 8 of last 9.  5 of those were of the 4 base variety...Talk around the league has mentioned that Rogers division could be the one of the most interesting pennant races.  The addition of the Bashers to that mix is most interesting.  Could be any ones to win...Towaco just seems to win when they need to. After taking two from rival Bashers, they fell to the surprising Crows 2 of 3. They came back to win 2 against the tough Lake County squad, then got Ringo'ed for the first two games against the Beatles who got Bashed by Bryan previously.  Kevin Gibson's Wolfpack gnawed back to salvage the final game and maintain a slight lead in Rogers...The Bashers are getting mileage out of old Jason Isringhausen. An old CBA save leader, Izzy has 4 saves already in the pen despite 1 poor outing which screwed his ERA...Pitching relief is scarce it seems in 2012.  Some feel the market on reserve players will skyrocket after the All star break.  With RFA's at 2, trade talk has been heating up again...Joliet has 46 SB's already in 18 games.  That projects to 414 for a season.  The record is 364, I believe.  Bourne has 11 already....The Crows JJ Hardy is batting 6 HR 20 RBI .345 to lead the Crows into contention.  Longue Pointe has been solid this season with some balanced play.  Torii Hunter is at 4 HR 16 RBI .333 to start...

Juan Pierre:  We are looking at a CBA legend.  Just look at his numbers, and he's not done yet.  The Joliet Jackhammers star LF/CF Juan Pierre has a hall of fame worthy career as evidenced by his superior hitting and speed numbers.  In 2012 he has 6 more to total 725 career stolen bases. 10 seasons over 30, and eight over 70!  Stole 80 in '06, 88 in '07, 87 in 2011.
and He has only made 30 errors over his long career in the OF a product of his consistent low E ratings.  A career .305 average.  Only 9 career HR's but 887 runs, a threat for 1000+ career.  80 career triples.  Quite a career.
